If you're after a project you're best off looking in the States I would have thought. Most of the cars brought over here have been pretty well looked after, and the odds of finding another RHD languishing in a barn somewhere are pretty close to zero I'd have thought!

How much are you looking at spending?

well i know it all depends....i wouldnt want to pay more then 8k (inc. getting it over here) if it was stateside. I know thats low but for a project i havent even seen to then pay 3k getting it here? wouldnt want to pay too much...the more i look at it the more it makes sense to buy a good example....i would love to restore one though! another one back on the road etc. i have done lots of classics in the past. mind you...i assume parts for these are pretty scarce.

i could stretch to 15-20 soon but the idea was to spend around that but over time/at the same time learning about them!

i also want to find that 'rocco to run round!

I wouldn't be too worried about picking one up for that kind of money at the moment. You might have to wait a little while for the right one to come up but they are out there.

I won the auction for 7176 on eBay a few weeks ago. It's a good runner, recently restored by a specialist after sitting in mud for 13 years. Still got cosmetics to sort on it (and probably some mechanicals too, but the major stuff has been done) and I'm reckoning on spending £9k to get it into the country. Might be a little more in the end, but that's my ballpark.

So if you're happy to get a project car, it shouldn't be impossible to bring one back over here for less than £8k all in. Keep your eyes peeled on dmctalk.com and eBay and wait for the right one to come up...

Parts for these are not hard to get. Lots of mechanical bits crossover to other cars like fords and jags. Actual Delorean parts are plenty available in the states.

I bought a car in this country a year ago and have had a years worth of enjoyment with it, but am now restoring the chassis on it, so buying a good running car doesn't mean you won't have to take it apart and work on it.

A year already??? Where does the time go !
It only seems like 5 minutes since you bought DGS (yet everyday at work seems to drag for some reason...........)

It might be possible to find a project and bring it over, but you could end up sinking money into like theres no tommorrow, problem is unless you trust the seller or get someone to have a look for you...you dont really know what you are buying.

Unless you are interested in doing some of the work yourself or you have plenty of money in reserve, you may have to tackle cracked dash, interior re-trim, engine work, tyres, brakes, and also stainless work which can only be done properly by PJ Grady Europe, then you need to be sure the chassis is ok especially with the age of these cars now, otherwise you will have a body off to attempt also.

Given that there was a car for sale for 12k and another is still for sale at 13k already registered and on the road in the UK, they might be worth looking at.

Exactly that Al.. I couldnt agree more ....

Yes some 'bargains' could be had ...but over the last year or so they have been very few and far between..

12k?!?! wow they have come down since i last looked into it?? must be the current financial climate BLAH BLAH

thanks for all the advice chaps. I can do pretty much anything - not a fan of retrims mind rather pay for someone to do that (to a better standard to).

i am aware of the crossover parts i meant things like lights, seats, clocks, interior parts or anything DMC specific - can those be sourced easily? the benifit from doing VWs is the ease getting parts...however the constant welding on the ineviatable rot box gets tiresome...

I dont want one perfect as i want to be able to drive it - i know they are a bit thirsty - any figures on that?

i always believe cars should be driven and not locked away - obviously not as a daily but used reguary which is why i wouldnt want a pilot car, or a 200mile dry stored example as they should be kept locked away!

and if anyone knows anything about that funny little 'rocco...my idea in my head is to drive that around and quietly work on the D and one day make the swap over..!

cheers

Those ones in the UK seem to be bargains. Mathew's one definitely is. When I saw it in Ireland it was very good, and freshly set up by NickT

As for the chassis, what may appear to be a mint chassis may well have moisture under the epoxy in places. Mine looked ok, but a bit of a poke and the epoxy lifts off quite easily, and looking inside some of the sections its clear that the coating is coming off and you would never have seen that with the body on.

As for fuel economy, that seems to vary a bit, but in mine I get 30 to the gallon on a run easily, so perfectly usable, and once mines back together with the restored chassis I intend to use it as often as I can.

30? thats great!

just to make it clear i am not some teenager with no money who has painted a bug rat black....i have restored countless prestige cars from Ferrari dinos to vw splittys. i learned my trade from my fathers garage. i imagine you get a lot of posts on here about people wanting a delorean to 'tinker' with - the amount of cars i have sorted out for people due to them biting more off then they can chew is remarkable.

thanks for heads up on the chassis - i have yet to see a D in the flesh (!). seems a bit risky if you cant asses the chassis corrosion without the body off? make me wonder what surprises i might find if i go for a mint/fully restored example!

will keep you guys in the loop about what i decide - will continue reading!

cheers

Just going back to the original post - I'm relatively new here so forgive my ignorance... What Scirocco are we talking about?!

it was on ebay a couple of times, its a VW Scirocco done up (very badly) to look like a
BTTF car.

I seem to recall Brian in Sussex (who's got a BTTF replica) being parked next to it whilst
waiting to get the ferry home having been at Le Mans or summat.
